The Melanie Mystery Gift Project

Date Started: October 15, 2005
Date Finished: December 21, 2005
Price: $29.97

Pattern: Here and There Cables (From Scarf Style Pg. 15) and Knit Spiral Brim Hat Pattern
Yarn: Plymouth Yarn - Dreambaby DK; Spearmint (117).

My best friend Melanie's birthday came and past and I told her that I wanted to knit her something, and if I was going to knit her something what would she want me to knit her? She said a scarf, and I thought "Great.. I don't knit scarves" but this is Mel.. she was in my wedding.. (The only girl in my wedding besides me..) how could I say no? We were shopping at Michaels and she said "I love this color" when we passed the yarn.. So mental notes were made.. Light Aqua.. Scarf. Got it.

This was my first project that I couldn't blog at will about.. I could hardly stand it.. but I didn't want to take the chance of her finding it.. She does know where my blog is.. but I wasn't sure if she read it or not.. the possibility was there.. so giving away any details was an absolute no-no.

Looking for scarf patterns was pretty alien for me.. I live in Texas.. we don't really.. wear scarves.. We don't need to.. and I'm not one for wearing something just to wear it.. so I don't knit them.

The Scarf Style book ticked me off something vicious.. I hated the way they blur (ON PURPOSE!!) the best, and largest picture of each scarf or scarf-like-item.. But luckilly this scarf was somewhat easy to identify.. and I ended up knitting myself a sample out of stash yarn so I could really see it (and see if I could do it.)

When I was ready to buy the yarn I called up my Aunt Faye and asked her if she wanted to go yarn shopping, and she did ofcourse. I actually had to ask one of the shop workers to help us find the right yarn.. it had to be the illusive light aqua in DK weight.. She pointed us out a few options.. but most weren't quite right for one reason or another.. so we gave up.. and started browsing for other things... then way back by the sock yarn we found the Dreambaby DK.. and it was inexpensive enough to let us get out of there for "Under 30 dollars" (Dad's words) including the cable needle set I got to go with it.

So I was set.. I got 6 balls of the yarn.. and got to work... Knitting 6 feet of scarf was quite the undertaking for me.. but I really did enjoy it.. When I got to the end of the first ball I measured what I had.. 14".. More than a foot.. so the idea of the hat was born.. but I wasn't committed to it until I measured the next two balls worth.. After the scarf was over.. I had about a ball and a half of yarn left.. At least I think it was a half.. it's so hard to know.. lol.

I told her the hat was her late birthday gift (we do that.. lol.) and the scarf was her Christmas gift.. She really really enjoyed it.. and when I told her that I knitted the hat to where she could fold the brim over her ears..

"Like this?!"

Hehehe.. no no.. silly Melanie : P

She did get it figured out though.. She was really happy and it looks good on her!

My Ribby Cardi

Date started: March 23, 2005
Date finished: June 11, 2005
Price: $75.23

Pattern: Ribby Cardi (Chicknits.com)
Yarn: Rowan's All Seasons Cotton; True Blue (165), Dusk (219).

This was my first sweater, and it took a while.. but I think it turned out better than I expected! This project was supposed to be a ton cheaper than it ended up being. The majority of the cost turned up because of Dusk. (The sleeve color) I ended up using way more of it than I thought I would, so I didn't order the balls all together online. True Blue was a steal on Ebay though, if I make another one, I'll try my darndest to get both colors on Ebay.

I do think it was all worth it.. So many people have been impressed and I learned so many new things.. I was so scared of making a sweater.. but now I know I can do it, and I'm ready for more! (Just.. not till it's closer to winter! lol!)

Sydni's Baby Blankie

Date started: August 10, 2004
Date finished: September 4, 2004
Price: $71.28

Pattern: Peaches (From Rowan's Pipsqueaks Pg. 79)
Yarn: Rowan Handknit DK Cotton; Rosso (215), Linen (205), Ice Water (239), Tope (253), Galaxy (308).

This was my first expensive project.. (Atleast, I think it was expensive) I knitted it before my female cousin Kelly had her baby. I picked the colors according to the nursery she showed me which was designed in a kind of old style Americana way.. (Thus the muted red, whites, and blues.) I think she liked it : ) And Sydni looks SO cute!

And she is also wearing one of the hats I made out of the same yarn for her for Christmas : ) Sydni has her hand in Mammy's pocket.. hee.
